Alex Elias Jordan Spieth entered the day -5, but after a -9 63 on moving day, Spieth will tee off Sunday trailing the leaders by one. Spieth began the day birdie-birdie and would go on to eagle No. 6 after a 200-yard blind approach shot to six feet. Two holes later, on the Par 4-4th, Spieth's 3 wood off the tee found the edge of the cliff, leading to an absolutely terrifying approach shot. Although Spieth, from the edge of the cliff, landed his approach shot just off the green and saved par, Spieth could be heard saying, "It was by far the most nerve-racking shot I've ever hit in my life," to his caddie, Michael Greller after the shot. After the round, as Spieth reflected on his shot from the edge of 60 foot drop, Spieth said, "It was not smart. I regret doing it. It was the most nerve-racking shot I've ever hit. When I got to the green, I almost had this full-blown anxiety attack."
When a reporter asked Spieth, "How will you explain to your wife, when you talk to her?" Spieth responded, "I'm not really sure what's going to happen there." After the unthinkable and terrifying, yet miraculous par on No. 8, Spieth would birdie No. 9 to turn in 31. Quickly, Spieth's superb play continued, as he birdied No. 11, 14 and 15. Then, on No. 17, the 172 yard Par-3, Spieth threw a dart, yielding another birdie and on the Par-5 18th, Spieth gave himself another eagle putt, this one from 20 feet, after a tremendous iron shot from 231. Although Spieth missed the eagle putt, Spieth would go on to birdie No. 18, concluding a round of 63. Spieth will tee off tomorrow trailing the leaders by one and look to record his first win this season. Last year, Spieth finished T3 at Pebble Beach, a course that Spieth has won at before (2017).
