Alex Elias Data from Arccos Golf states that a scratch golfer averages 2.2 birdies per round and a 20-handicap averages 0.3. Scratch golfers are twenty shots better, yet only make 1.9 more birdies per round. When Leo Lee, Assistant Golf Professional at Ridgewood Country Club and McArthur Golf Club, was asked if he believed amateurs would be surprised by the data, Lee responded, "I do think amateurs will be surprised because I believe that most of them think making birdies is an automatic solution to reducing their score. I think they’ll be even more surprised about the average pars per round the scratch player makes versus the higher handicap players."
While Lee said, "The fastest way to reduce big numbers is to have a good tee ball and avoid penalty areas in your round," Lee continued by saying, "I'm a firm believer in giving yourself opportunities for birdies and even pars. Giving yourself those opportunities can reduce the big numbers from your score. If you're not giving yourself those opportunities, then you'll need to work on your long game. If you're giving yourself those opportunities and still making bad numbers, then you'll need to work on your putting/speed control." Speaking on his advice, Lee said, "If you keep track of that for a couple of rounds, you begin to have an idea of what you need to work on and can solve the issue by taking lessons/practicing with a purpose."

Alex Elias Following a dominant 7-under 65 in Round 1 at the the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Jon Rahm sits at 3-under for the tournament, after a second round 76 (+4). Speaking of the difficulty of Bay Hill, Rahm said, "Excuse my language, but it's f**king hard. It's firm, it's fast and it's blowing 30 miles an hour. It's a very difficult golf course."
Although Scottie Scheffler wasn't speaking to Rahm, Scheffler said, "I appreciate the fact that this golf course is very challenging, and I feel like it's a place where I can just try and hang in there. That's what I did last year. I didn't play amazing for four days. One of the guys I played a practice round with this week asked me what I did so well last year, and I just told 'em, 'I survived.' That's really what it felt like." Last season, coming into Bay Hill, Scheffler ranked 5th in Scoring Average, yet even he had to "hang in there," recording only two rounds under par (70-73-68-72). While Rahm ranks No. 1 in the OWGR, 1st in Scoring Average, has been inside the Top 10 in 19 out of his 21 rounds in 2023, he too may need to survive, if he wants to wear Arnold Palmer's Red Cardigan Sweater on Sunday. After two rounds, Rahm is T13, six shots behind leader Kurt Kitayama. |
