Alex Elias Heading into the 2021 PGA Tour season, Collin Morikawa was ranked 5th and Patrick Cantlay was ranked 12th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Notably, even given their respective Top-15 ranking, both decided to make a key change on the greens.
In Morikawa's case, he changed from a more traditional grip to the "saw" grip, quickly winning with the new grip at the The WGC - Workday Championship at The Concession. After his win, Morikawa said, "I’m so excited about this, because, yes, I’m going to have bad putting weeks here and there, but overall I feel way more confident, especially like on a putt like on 18, just to really roll the putter and get it rolling down the line." Morikawa continued, "My putting has never felt this good, and whether I make or miss putts, knowing that my stroke is good, line-wise, tempo, that's all that matters." Subsequently, Cantlay decided to switch from a blade putter to a mallet putter, specifically moving to a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5. After Cantlay's win at the BMW Championship, Cantlay said, "My game feels really good. It has for a while now, since Memorial, and I’m finally starting to putt like me again. I have been working with the guys over at Scotty Cameron all year since I got into this new putter. (I) finally have one that feels absolutely perfect, and I can’t thank those guys over at Scotty Cameron – Paul Vizanko and Jose [Hernandez] – enough. They just sent me a ton of putters, and I got the magic one now." Morikawa and Cantlay's willingness to change serve as a crucial lesson. PGA Tour Putting Coach John Graham said, "PGA Tour players are constantly striving to improve or return to form if off a little. A change of grip and/or change of putter can have a significant influence because the differences between good and great are very small for them. Any little positive change is a big deal when there isn’t as much left to improve."
