Alex Elias Gary Player once said, "A strong mind is one of the key components that separates the great from the good." As Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland have respectively risen to 10th and 11th in the Official World Golf Rankings, at times their mindset has been overshadowed by their stellar play, but in pulling back the curtain, it becomes apparent how their mindset has contributed immensely to their immediate success on the PGA Tour.
Ahead of the U.S. Open at The Country Club, Morikawa described "a mentally tough golfer" as, "Acceptance. We are the best players in the world and we set ourselves to high standards. When you don't perform the way you want to, you can get upset. It can be frustrating, and that's how it’s been recently, but you just have to accept that you're going to hit bad shots." In the five tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, Morikawa recorded finishes of T26-T29-T55-T40-CUT. Morikawa finished T5 at the U.S. Open. A month earlier, at the PGA Championship, Hovland said, "Obviously golf is still hard, but I try to just trust what I'm doing instead of playing with fear. Just step up to the shot, if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. But I'm not worrying about the result." Mature beyond their years, Morikawa and Hovland already understand the mindset of facing fear head-on, which Sam Snead once referred to as, "Of all the hazards, fear is the worst." In speaking with Dr. Rick Sessinghaus, Morikawa's coach, Sessinghaus said, "Positive mindset is crucial to performance. Our thoughts will affect the state we play the game. Golf requires feel, timing, and lack of tension to perform at one's best. Having a mindset of acceptance and non-attachment allows a golfer to swing with freedom, which is much better than stressed. Emotions are triggered by our perspective of what just happened and what might happen. Managing our emotions is about staying in the present moment on what is relevant," when asked about the mindset of Morikawa and Hovland.

Alex Elias Lindsay Ferguson, Retail Manager/Golf Professional at Dedham Country & Polo Club: Golf hoodies are the one item we haven’t been able to keep in stock all season. Every company is making them now, but the Greyson Colorado (a thin performance hoodie) and the Bleeker (a knit material hoodie) were the best-selling pieces for us this season.
Jessica Cavolina, Golf Shop Manager at Maidstone Club: I’d say my Christmas recommendation this year would be a Cashmere Hoodie from Greyson. The quality is top shelf and the style is hard to beat. We have sold through two deliveries of them in multiple colors and can’t keep them in stock. It’s not so much that people are asking for them as that when they see them the HAVE to buy one. Cashmere hoodies have become a staple from other brands like RLX and Johnnie-O. All of them are great options for a holiday gift for your favorite golfer. Kirk Satterfield, Head Golf Professional at Westhampton Country Club: This has been the year of the hoodie. Greyson is a very popular hoodie for us. The cashmere hoodie, which is called the Koko, has been a great seller and think it would be a great Christmas gift. The Pine Hoodie from Peter Millar has been very popular too, and more of a tech hoodie. Many of our requests for Christmas go into lifestyle apparel. We've done very well with the Peter Millar Suffolk Quilted Travel Coat and the Greyson Yukon Vests. Andrew Blatnik, Director of Retail Operations at Oak Hill Country Club: This entire year, I have not been able to keep Greyson apparel in stock. The brand is extremely hot right now. I currently have no Greyson apparel in stock to sell. For that reason, I just sent out a Greyson microsite to our membership, where they can pick and choose the pieces they want and have everything shipped to their home in time for the holidays. They can choose the style, color, size, embroidered logo (or not), etc. Our bestselling polo was the Saranac Polo. Moving to holiday season, the microsite focuses on fashion outerwear like the Koko cashmere blend hoodie or the Yukon jacket. In addition, I always recommend gifting items that people need, but don’t want to buy for themselves. This year, a great gift in that category would be a Club Glove Travel Bag. Almost every golfer takes their clubs when they travel, via airlines or Shipsticks, and not having some kind of travel bag is a liability - you never know if something will show up broken. Plus, everyone likes having that big present under the tree, and this hits the spot! Todd Ogborn, Assistant Golf Professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club: The most popular piece has been the Holdnerness & Bourne Sullivan Pullover. We keep ordering more but can’t seem to keep them in stock! Joe Merlin, Monroe Golf Club: Holderness & Bourne Men's Apparel - our members have really enjoyed the quality of the product and the fresh colors that they bring to the table. Shipments come in and they’re going out just as quick. Katie Wiedmar, First Assistant Golf Professional and Golf Shop Manager at Winged Foot Golf Club: We always sell out of the Johnstons of Elgin cashmere blankets during the holiday season. They are always a hit! Keith Clawson, Assistant Golf Professional at Merion Golf Club: I think H&B is really starting to take off. Highly recommend the H&B Ward sweater. Peter Millar is always good. They have come out with some cool hoodies. Brendan Allen, Assistant Golf Professional at Chevy Chase Club: The Holderness & Bourne Sullivan pullover is by far my favorite piece and has been incredibly popular. Really nice product and some great colors. Sara Dickson, Head Golf Professional at Wilderness Country Club: Smathers & Branson belts! Incredibly popular. Can wear them on and off the course and they even come in a perfect hand-made box for gift wrapping! Matt Alwin, Sakonnet Golf Club: Headcovers. We got really creative with them this year and we sold out of them three times! Sankaty Head Golf Club Staff: Highly recommend Holderness & Bourne! Our most popular item has been the Holderness & Bourne Sullivan Pullover! Jack Davis, Head Golf Professional at Essex County Club: Holderness and Bourne Sullivan Pullover. Alex Elias When: December 10th Where: Pelican Golf Club (Belleair, Florida) Who: Tiger Woods & Rory McIlroy vs. Justin Thomas & Jordan Spieth First reported by The Fried Egg, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will face Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in the seventh edition of Capital One's The Match. The Match, which debuted in 2018, as a head-to-head match play event between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, has since seen Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Charles Barkley, Steph Curry, Bryson DeChambeau, Aaron Rodgers, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen. It will be Woods' third appearance, participating in the inaugural event against Mickelson in 2018 and returning in 2020 to team up with Manning to defeat Mickelson and Brady. McIlroy, Thomas, and Spieth will be making their debuts in the event.
In his return, having not competed in a tournament since missing the cut at the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews in July, Woods will be paired with world No. 1 Rory McIlroy. The two, who currently rank 1st and 2nd among active players on the PGA Tour in wins, will face Thomas and Spieth, respectively ranked 7th and 13th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Two months ago, at The Presidents Cup, Thomas and Spieth won all four of their matches, becoming the first American pair since Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in 2009 to go 4-0-0 (and just the third overall). The seventh edition of The Match will benefit Hurricane Ian relief efforts. Previous editions of The Match have raised nearly $33 million for charitable organizations and provided 27 million meals through Feeding America. |
